"It's sports"

Sup fellas.

Hope all who went had fun at the BBQ. Those who didn't should probably go for the next one. They're actually fun.

Ok so I was talking to my coach recently about the 2006 fencing world championships, which were held in Turin this year. Russia got a gold and a bronze in the indiv, Hungary got a silver and Korea got the other bronze (see asians can challenge the europeans). Russia has Podzniakov, at 33 widely held as the best saber fencer still competing, and Yakimenko, who has one of the best attacks in the world. They also have Frossine, who won the bronze. In 2005 Podzniakov pulled them through the team championships even with screwups by Frossine and Yakimenko in their last bouts (they lost 5-3 and 5-0). This year they only got a bronze. Ukraine beat them in the semifinals, and France (in their first martial victory since Napoleon) won the team event. I was stunned; their fencers finished 6th, 10th and 17th and they have never been noted for being strong in saber.

The point (as my coach kept trying to tell me) is that "it's sports", and anything can happen. No one is 'supposed' or 'destined' to win. You can do all the preparation in the world but on the piste, its down to you and your opponent and no god has any control over the outcome. So remember, anything can happen. Train your hardest and don't ever give up.
